As we know Baihe’s English name is Lily Bulb, but in Chinese it means “one hundred persons’ joint effort”. Where did the Chinese name come from?  Here is the story.

One day a gang of pirates roared a fishing village. They not only took away all of the fishermen’s jewels, clothing and food, but also kidnapped many women and children to an island.

The women and children could not escape because there was no boat available. A few days later, the pirates went to the sea to loot again.However, after they went to the sea，suddenly typhoon came and overturned their boat, finally they were drowned.

The women and children got a temporary relief, but in two weeks they consumed all the food on the island.  Facing the endless sea, there was neither a boat nor any other way to send messages to the village. They had to wait. They collected some wild herbs, fruits and caught sea foods to feed themselves. One day, hey found a round fat grass-root, looking like garlic. They washed it and cooked it in a pot.  After it was well cooked, it tasted sweet with nice smell. Since then, they dug this grass-root for meals all the time.

Finally, one day an herb collector came to the island in a boat.  The women and children were so excited to see him.  The herb collector expressed sympathy to them and asked in surprise: “There are no grains on the island, what did you eat all this time?” “At the beginning we had food.  When there was no food at all, we found a garlic-like bulb, which tasted sweet with a nice smell. We ate it as food all the time to survive. The herb collector saw the healthy women and children with rosy cheeks and chubby faces. He concluded that this was a nutritious plant. Therefore, he got one and took it back to grow in his garden. After verification, the bulb was proved to have the following actions.  It could moisten the lung to stop coughing, clear heart fire and calm the mind. But no one knew the name of it.  The herb collector named it “Baihe”, because it was discovered by many people with a joint effort.” The term “Baihe” has been continuously used until now.  No matter what it is called in Latin and English, the Chinese people call it “Baihe”.
