After Western medicine was introduced to China, missionary hospitals and medical colleges were set up. The returned overseas Chinese students from Europe, America and Japan who had received education in Western medicine became the backbone of the medical workers. They began to explore traditional Chinese medicine with modern scientific approaches.
The institutions that carried out research of medicinal substances were Department of Pharmacology, Peking Union Medical College, Institute of Materia Medica and Institute of Physiology, Peking Academy of Sciences, Medical School of Peking University. |
