Moxibustion took shape in the Qin and Han dynasties (221B.C~220), developed in the Jin, Tang and Song Dynasties (265~1270), matured in the Ming Dynasty (1368~1644) and declined in the Qing dynasty (1644~-1911). Since 1950’s, moxibusion has been attached great importance by clinicians and researchers at home and abroad. And there are more and more clinical reports about its mechanism and effect. At present, we' ve had a deeper understanding of its mechanism and effect. It is widely considered that its therapeutic effect is based on the specific effect produced by the physical factors when moxa-wool is burning (warming and spectrum radiation effect) and chemical factors (the medicinal action of moxa-wool), in combination with the specific function of points and meridian transmission.
