Sun Simiao (581-682) lived in the Sui and Tang Dynasties.  He wrote Qian Jin Yao Fang (Invaluable Formulas for Emergencies), and was worshiped as Herbal King.  There are a lot of lengendary folk stories about him.   Once Sun Simiao met four people carrying a coffin on the road.  An old woman crying bitterly followed them.  On closer look, Sun Simiao found bright blood dripping from the bottom of the coffin.  He immediately went up and asked about it.   It was the old woman’s only daughter, who just died of difficult labor.  The baby was still in her body.  Sun Simiao thought this woman might be rescued.     So he asked them to stop and uncover the coffin.  The woman inside had a wax yellow complexion but her pulse could be felt though weak.  Sun Simiao took out the needles brought with him and inserted them into some points.  He also poured a medicine into her mouth.     The woman came round soon as if magic was happening.  Then, the baby was also delivered. He was famed for resuscitating the dead, and thus called  a "semigod".
