| Li Shizhen (1518-1593) was an outstanding physician and naturalist. His Ben Cao Gang Mu (Compendium of Materia Medica) was an overall summary of materia medica, covering botany, zoology, mineralogy and chemistry. Classification of medicinal substances was developed in the book, which was the most advanced book of its time. Darwin said it was the "ancient Chinese encyclopedia", and Li Shizhen was awarded the title of the "Prince of Materia Medica" by Needham Josoph. It has been translated into Japanese, Korean, Latin, English, French, German, etc. |
