| Traditional Chinese Medicine in Marco Polo’s Book |

Marco Polo, an Italian who arrived in Shangdu in 1275, stayed in China for 17 years. In his book The Travels of Marco Polo, he recorded a large amount of knowledge on traditional Chinese medicine and health in China at that time. For example, he mentioned many medications produced in China, such as rhubarb produced in Gansu province, and lesser galangal and camphor in Fujian province. When talking about the snake bile produced in Yunnan province, he provided a detailed description of its effect in the treatment of bites by rabid animals. It was also used to accelerate parturition, alleviate swelling and pain. |
