| Introduction of Quinine to China |
In the Qing Dynasty ( 1644~1911), European missionaries came to China, bringing with them Western science, technology and medicine while introducing traditional Chinese medical theory, sphygmology, acupuncture and moxibustion to Europe. At the same time, some Western missionary-doctors provided medical service alongside performing their missionary work in China. When Emperor Kang Xi suffered from chronic malaria in 1693, missionaries offered quinine to him. After taking the medicine, he was eventually cured. Chinese medical experts then carried out in-depth analysis and research on quinine's property, flavor, effect and indications. After that, it was extensively applied. As Emperor Kang Xi attached great importance to Western culture, Western medicine was gradually acknowledged and adopted by the Chinese people.
