| Doctors of Western Medicine Learning TCM |
In 1955, the China Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine implemented the first class for doctors of Western medicine to learn traditional Chinese medicine. It was an unprecedented move which had profound effects on the future.
In April 1956, the Committee of Doctors of Western Medicine Learning Traditional Chinese Medicine was set up to enhance management.
In June1956, the Ministry of Health issued an order “Greatly Boosting Doctors of Western Medicine Learning Traditional Chinese Medicine”, which pointed out the importance of the project. Then more and more doctors of Western medicine began to learn traditional Chinese medicine. |

In 1978 the Ministry of Health issued another order about “Full-Time Study of Traditional Chinese Medicine by Doctors of Western Medicine” , in which the schooling, requirements of professional qualities, admission , teaching staff and textbooks were all specified.
It was laid down in “the 11th Five-year Plan Period on Continuance Education of Traditional Chinese Medicine” issued by the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine in 2007. It states that it is essential for doctors of Western medicine to do advanced study of traditional Chinese medicine to train 100 high-level clinical doctors who are able to deal with clinical difficulties with the theory and methods of traditional Chinese medicine. |
